The application is the first stage of the fireman recruitment process. Once you have located a vacancy, you will need to complete your application form and submit. The fireman application form will contain questions related to your suitability for the role. You will need to provide specific examples of times when you have previously demonstrated core criteria, for example remaining calm under pressure. It pays great dividends to really invest time in completing your application form. Practice first, and ensure it is neat and tidy with no grammar or spelling mistakes. Ensure you read the guidelines supplied before completing the application.
As with any application, ensure you do not lie in your answers. You will be questioned on the answers you have provided in the interview, and it will become quite apparent to any experienced interviewer if you have lied or exaggerated your answers. It is advisable to keep a copy of your answers so you can re read them should you be invited back to interview. This is a great way to be sure that you will remember what answers you gave! |

The Fireman Recruitment Process - Assessments
Should you pass the application stage, you will be invited in for testing. The psychometric tests are split into 3 separate areas.
Working with Numbers: You will need to complete 32 questions covering basic arithmetic. This is not very challenging.
Understanding Information: You will need to read through various passages of text such as fire records of extracts from a training document, then answer questions on those passages. This test will assess your ability to pick out vital details from large blocks of text.
Situational awareness and problem solving: This will test your general common sense. You will be presented with a situation and multiple choices detailing what action you could take. You will pick one course of action. The main thing to consider in this section is that safety should always be your prime concern.
The final part is the national fireman questionnaire. This questionnaire is designed to see if you match the personal qualities and attributes of a fireman. They are as follows:

The Fireman Recruitment Process - Physical Test
The physical tests are designed to measure your fitness, dexterity, strength and confidence during simulate scenarios. The six tests are enclosed space, ladder climb, casualty evac, ladder lift, equipment assembly, and equipment carry. These are all tasks fireman will have to perform in their careers.
The Fireman Recruitment Process - Interview
The interview will start of with more relaxed general questions such as why do you want to become a fireman, and what are your expectations of the job. After this, the interview will become much more competency based, meaning you will have to provide examples of times when you have demonstrated a specific personal quality. Including examples of times when you have worked safely, when you have worked as a team, when you have used training in your job, and when you have followed orders. As mentioned earlier, its important that you remain truthful, as the interviewer may decide to ask more detailed questions on your answers, if you are lying it will soon become quite obvious.
The Fireman Recruitment Process - Medical
The medical test will include a hearing test, hear rate test, lung function test, physical stamina test, and a general medical questionnaire. its impossible to give guidance on what they are looking for, if you have detailed queries its best to contact the recruiter.
